Before Classes Begin

Housing
You are responsible for securing your own housing and transportation while staying in Seattle. You may stay with a host family, in shared housing, in an apartment, or with friends or relatives. On a space available basis, you can obtain accommodation in the UW dormitories, where you also have the option of purchasing meals in the dining program. In Autumn Quarter, the UW Dormitories are not available. For more information, please visit the Housing page.

Medical Insurance
All full-time students should have medical insurance. The UW International & English Language Programs offers inexpensive medical insurance for those who do not have coverage from their own countries.

Directions
Classes are located on the University of Washington main campus. The International & English Language Programs administrative offices are located at:

4333 Brooklyn Avenue NE
13th Floor
Seattle, WA 98195

For directions, see map.

Facilities on the Main UW Campus
As a Campus IEP student, you can use the excellent libraries on the main UW campus to borrow books, do research, and use computers to check e-mail and search the web.

With prior approval, as an international student, you can work part-time on campus only. Please be aware that not all campus jobs are open to nonmatriculated students.

Orientations
The week before classes begin, you will have two orientation meetings to learn about the program, courses, immigration, banking, health, safety, and life in Seattle. At the first orientation, we will have a welcome reception and lunch for you. After the second orientation, we will have a new student reception, and you will have a chance to meet all of the new students, the faculty, and our staff.

Welcome Packets
You will receive a welcome packet at the first orientation session. This includes the Student Handbook and information about the Seattle area.

Campus Tour
University of Washington students will take you on a walking tour of the campus. You will see the buildings where your classes will be, the libraries, cafeterias, and other points of interest on the campus.

Weekly Planner
Each quarter you receive a UW International & English Language Programs weekly planner. You can use the planner to write down your homework, activities, and parties. The planner also has useful information and websites.

Student Services and Immigration Advisor
You will have a group appointment with the Student Services and Immigration Advisor when you arrive. During your stay, you can meet with her if you have questions about attending an American college or university, taking the TOEFL or other standardized tests, or volunteering in Seattle. She can also help with any personal or academic problems.

U-Pass (Bus Pass)
As an IEP student, you can buy a low-cost bus pass. You can ride the buses in and around Seattle, ride the University of Washington Night Shuttle, and get discounts in many local businesses.

No Smoking Policy
Smoking is prohibited in all university facilities, including those in Downtown Seattle. Please read the smoking policies of the University of Washington and of the City of Seattle policy before you come to class.

Placement
You will be given a placement test before your classes begin. The test has reading, writing, and listening sections. The test will tell us your level in each skill area, and you will be able to choose your classes based on the test results. You may be higher in one skill area than another. The first day of class, you will have a pretest in your core classes and your level may be adjusted.
