In today’s workplace, it can be a challenge for employees and employers to meet the communication needs of a culturally and linguistically diverse workforce.

We design programs to help non-native speakers of English who work in the Seattle area. Classes are typically held on site but may also be held on the UW campus, upon request.

Depending on the group's focus and purpose, areas of instruction may include, but are not limited to, these skills:

  • Pronunciation and fluency - sounds; rhythm; stress and intonation; compensatory strategies
  • Assisting clients by telephone - standard responses; handling client complaints; clarification in listening and responding; terminating unproductive exchanges
  • Presentation skills and the language of meetings - organizing a presentation; participating appropriately in meetings; levels of formality and informality
  • E-mail communication - etiquette; clarity; contrast with written memos and spoken expression
  • Spoken grammar skills - appropriate to client or co-worker interaction
  • Writing skills for specific fields - for example, marketing, accounting, IT, and clerical
  • Job-specific vocabulary and idioms
We recommend a minimum of 2.5 hours of instruction per week per employee and a maximum class size of 9 students.
