Program Overview
What is BI?
Organizations often have access to massive amounts of information in the form of databases, spreadsheets, text-based documents, and various internal and external communications. Often this information is not stored and shared effectively. An organization may be compartmentalized, may have multiple sites nationally or internationally. Employees at all levels may not be aware of the vast amount of information which does exist.
Business intelligence is the key to bringing together information, people, and technology to successfully manage an organization. It crosses the domains of the technical and the organizational. Practitioners of BI are comfortable in both the technical and the business world, having an understanding of how the organization operates, the kind of information and data that exist, what kind of information would be most useful in strategic planning, and how to communicate with implementers of an IT strategy to organize and manage data as an information asset.
How Does Data Warehousing Support BI?
Data warehousing is the discipline of creating a robust data and technical architecture to support business intelligence in an organization. Having a well-designed data warehouse system can improve the use, flow and sharing of information and create a valuable context to influence strategic organizational decision-making.
What Can Students Do With This Certificate?
The certificate will allow students to work through a BI project from its inception through implementation. They can work individually or on teams to gather business requirements, plan the BI/DW project, design/develop the BI/DW solution, source the data, load the data, and perform various analyses on the data, answering the questions gathered at the outset of the project. Students will utilize information from overviews of BI/DW technologies from various vendors, and BI/DW concepts and principles. By the conclusion of the certificate, students should have an understanding of the concepts and technologies involved and be able to plan for and implement a moderately-sized BI project.
