A First-Year (Level I) Writers' Program
Approved by the UW English Department and UW Department of Communication
Also offered beginning Winter 2009 in a six-month compressed format in Bellevue >>
Basic techniques of nonfiction writing from concept to publication are covered in this two-course sequence, which prepares students to write and submit their work to a variety of newspapers, magazines, or book publishers. The instructors —all published writers —use lectures, exercises, readings, and hands-on projects to provide knowledge of nonfiction literature and writing.
In the first course, students study a range of types of nonfiction literature (including magazines, personal essays, books, and online publications) and complete assignments designed to develop key skills including interviewing, researching, organizing, and writing about topics they select.
In the second course, students work in smaller classes to write and receive feedback on a portfolio of publishable quality work that can lay the groundwork to pursue freelance opportunities. Shorter- and intermediate-length assignments lead to the program's centerpiece: a publishable, feature-length article, personal essay, or book chapter. Notable writers appear as guest speakers in both courses.
