If you have an investigative mind and enjoy collecting and analyzing information, you could develop a successful career in the field of private investigation. This program is designed to increase the legal knowledge and professional skills of those who wish to enter and advance in the private investigation field.
The program covers such topics as courts and the legal system, with a focus on state and federal laws relating to the practice of investigation; practices of civil and criminal case investigation and preparation, including discovery and document review, crime scene investigation, interview techniques, court testimony, and report writing; and specific types of investigation, including homicide and death, domestic violence, missing persons, auto accidents, product liability, fraud, and malpractice.
Many investigators work for themselves as independent contractors, while others work in a wide range of settings within law offices, public defender associations, insurance companies, agencies owned by other investigators, and government agencies, such as Labor and Industries or Child Protective Services. At the conclusion of the certificate program, participants have the opportunity to take the Washington state exam required to obtain the operative license to work for an attorney, law firm, or private investigation agency.
