Autumn Quarter
SQL Server Essentials: Concepts and Tools
Schedule: (5 classroom sessions and 5 online sessions) Wednesdays, 6-9 p.m., Oct. 1-Dec. 10, 2008 (no class November 26); $669; 3 CEUs. Instructor: Mary Sweeney
The first course will introduce SQL Server. Topics included will involve relational database concepts, SQL programming, SQL Server tools, as well as introduce topics that will be presented in more detail in subsequent courses.

- An overview of business intelligence and requirements gathering
- Review of structured query language (SQL), including data definition language (DDL), data manipulation language (DML), data control language (DCL)
- Transaction processing vs. decision support
- Record locking
- Scripting concepts
- Indexing
- Optimization basics
- Permissions
- Architecture basics (storage, notification, caching)
- Base Table Integrity & constraints
- Query Analyzer & Enterprise Manager (2000) vs. Management Studio (2005)
Prerequisites: database design and relational database theory; basic SQL; some exposure to a database software product; familiarity with general programming concepts.

Database Development
Schedule: (5 classroom sessions and 5 online sessions) Wednesdays, 6-9 p.m., Jan. 7-Mar. 11, 2009; $669; 3 CEUs. Instructor: Sylvia Vargas
Focuses on actual development of a more sophisticated database application. The distinction between application (UI) and database development is examined, along with programming concepts, views, security issues and reporting.
