English Language Proficiency

All students taking online learning courses or programs are expected to have adequate English language proficiency. Students are advised that they should meet one or more of the following English language test scores before they attempt to take any courses (other than English language courses for non-native speakers):

  • TOEFL: 500 (old) or 172 (computer-based)
  • MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery): 72
  • SAT Verbal: 430
  • IELTS: 6.0
  • TOEIC: 650

Note: applicants for degree programs who are not U.S. citizens must meet separate University of Washington English language requirements for admission and graduation.
