Tax laws allow eligible taxpayers to claim a tax credit of up to $2,000 for UW Extension courses. Under the Lifetime Learning Credit (LLC), taxpayers may claim 20 percent of the first $10,000 of qualified tuition and related expenses as a tax credit. (These expenses include any required enrollment fees, such as the quarterly technology fee, but exclude books, room and board, equipment, etc.).
Eligibility: The LLC covers education expenses paid for academic periods during the tax year. While the tax credit excludes expenses covered by scholarships, taxfree grants, or employer education assistance, it does include all qualified out-of-pocket expenses and those paid by loans.
